Wow, it has been a long time since my last posting! But that is because every spare moment that has not been spent at work or sleeping has been spent working on the house completing the finish tasks that we had committed to. Our original move-in date was August 24. Our builders Rich and Jane had done a fantastic job and completed everything they committed to on schedule. However Paul and I were not quite as efficient on our “By Owner” finish tasks that we had committed to, and so the schedule slipped. But now all we have finally completed all those jobs. The lower level concrete floor has been stained a pretty golden color. The lower level bathroom shower has been tiled, and the floor tile is finished. Ditto for the upper level bathroom. The hardwood flooring has been installed, sanded and the oil finish applied and cured. The walls and ceiling are painted, the clay plaster we needed for Occupancy is done. The south balcony, front porch and west screened porch cedar planks have all been stained and covered with their protective coatings for the winter ahead….Paul and I have been busy working away day after day. At times we both looked at each other and wondered if it will every end.
And then, it did. On October 1st we started moving in, box after box, most of it untouched and still in it’s packed state from 15 months ago when we left Santa Rosa. On October 7th the town of Colrain officially issued the Occupancy Permit (it is supposed to happen before you move in, but hey, sometimes things slide in the small hilltowns, lucky for us).
And now that we are finally settled with most of our belongings unpacked, we absolutely love our new home. It is a wonderfully cozy new space. The lighting which we had made such a fuss over (and now I am so glad we did insist on the extra windows on the south side) is lovely. The view of Stone Mountain from the south balcony is beautiful. The kitchen is a joy to cook in. I love getting up at sunrise, brewing a cup of coffee and enjoying it looking out over the North river and Stone mountain, breathing in deeply the clean mountain air. And I love standing on the balcony after dark, looking up at the spectacular night sky. Best of all, our cozy home is surrounded by the most wonderful neighbors. Without their help we would not have been able to do this.
Just a week after we moved in we had our first visitors. Our friends the Finkle family from Santa Rosa arrived. Their timing was amazing, they blessed us twice: helping up pack up in Santa Rosa in June 2014 and now unpacking some of those very same boxes 15 months later. Jan helped me unpack and get the kitchen functional while Ryan and Caleb undertook the exterior caulking and Tom did some interior staining of the woodwork.
Rich and Jane built us a wonderful home, they are the best On April 15th we started with a concept, by October 1 Rich and Jane had turned it in to a reality. Not only are they great builders but the are the nicest people and not too many folks can say that they actually had fun building with their contractors. Rich, Jane, it was a real pleasure. I plan to write a few separate posts focusing on various aspects of the house, including photos. And off course, we also had a great architect – Peter, thanks a ton!
